Join this absolute beginner-friendly workshop on knitting woolen socks—held at Lankamaailma, a yarn lover’s dream (think candy store, but for yarn, tools, and color)!
How long: 4-day workshop
Materials Provided: A written, step-by-step knitting guide.
Goal: To knit one cozy pair of woolen socks by the end of the workshop.

Session 1: 04 June 2025

Session 1: Introduction to Basic Techniques
Objective: Learn foundational stitches and begin knitting in the round.
Introduction to knit and purl stitches
Casting stitches onto knitting needles
Introduction to ribbing (k1, p1 or k2, p2 pattern)
Starting circular knitting with five double-pointed needles
Homework: Practice ribbing and knitting in the round to form the sock cuff.
Session 2: Knitting the Leg & Preparing the Heel
Objective: Transition from ribbing to jersey stitch and prepare for heel shaping.
Introduction to jersey stitch (stockinette stitch in the round)
Continuing the leg portion of the sock
Measuring foot length and marking where the heel will begin
Homework: Knit the leg portion up to the heel.
Session 3: Shaping the Heel
Objective: Turn the heel using short rows and decreases.
Casting off stitches for the heel flap (if using the flap & gusset method)
Picking up stitches to rejoin the work
Decreases to shape the heel and transition to the foot
Homework: Complete the heel and begin knitting the foot section.
Session 4: Finishing the Foot & Toes
Objective: Complete the sock with toe decreases and grafting.
Knitting the foot portion to the correct length
Decreasing stitches to shape the toe
Finishing with a grafting (Kitchener) stitch to close the toe
Final adjustments and troubleshooting
Take-home: A finished pair of woollen socks!
You can buy yarn, needles, and supplies in the store or bring your own.
